What Is the Earthquake Risk When Buying a Home in Texas?

Patrick Kevin Fagan Patrick Kevin Fagan Updated August 20, 2026

Earthquake risk in Texas is very low compared to California or the Pacific Northwest. However, induced seismicity from oil and gas activity has caused small earthquakes in parts of North Texas. Standard homeowners insurance does not cover earthquake damage coverage requires a separate policy.

Understanding Texas Earthquake Risk

Texas is not located on a major fault line, so natural tectonic earthquakes are extremely rare. However, induced seismicity earthquakes caused by human activity like wastewater injection from oil and gas production has caused small tremors in areas like the Dallas-Fort Worth region and West Texas. These are typically minor (magnitude 2-4) and rarely cause structural damage.

Earthquake Insurance Is Separate

Standard homeowners insurance policies do not cover earthquake damage. If you want earthquake coverage, you need a separate policy or endorsement. In Texas, earthquake insurance is inexpensive (often $100-$300 per year) because the risk is so low. Most buyers in Texas skip earthquake insurance, but it is available if you want the peace of mind.

Patrick's Take

Earthquake risk in Texas is about as low as it gets in the continental US. I focus my buyers on flood, windstorm, and hail risk instead which are much more relevant to Texas homeowners.
