How Are Property Tax Rates Broken Down in San Antonio?

Patrick Kevin Fagan Patrick Kevin Fagan Updated August 19, 2026

Your property tax rate in San Antonio is made up of several components: school district taxes, county taxes, city taxes, and special district taxes. The total rate typically ranges from 1.8 percent to 2.5 percent of your home's assessed value. Each component funds different public services including schools, roads, emergency services, and infrastructure.

School District Taxes (The Largest Component)

School district taxes make up the largest portion of your property tax bill, typically about 50 to 60 percent of the total rate. In San Antonio, the school tax rate varies by district. Rates are generally between 0.8 percent and 1.5 percent depending on the district. These taxes fund local public schools including teacher salaries, facilities, and educational programs. Your homestead exemption reduces the taxable value for school taxes.

County Taxes

Bexar County levies property taxes for county-wide services including roads and bridges, law enforcement, courts, jails, health services, and administrative operations. The county tax rate is typically around 0.25 to 0.40 percent of assessed value. This rate applies to all properties within Bexar County regardless of which city or school district you are in.

City Taxes

The City of San Antonio and other municipalities within Bexar County levy their own property taxes. The city tax rate funds police and fire departments, parks and recreation, public works, libraries, and municipal services. San Antonio's city tax rate is typically around 0.5 to 0.6 percent. If you live in an unincorporated area, you may pay a different rate or no city tax.

Special District Taxes

Additional taxing districts may apply depending on where you live. These include hospital districts, flood control districts, emergency services districts, water districts, community college districts, and road districts. Each special district has its own rate, typically 0.01 to 0.10 percent. These appear as separate line items on your tax bill. The total of all special district taxes combined is usually a small portion of your overall rate.

Patrick's Take

"Understanding your tax rate breakdown helps you see exactly where your money goes. It also helps you understand why two homes with the same value can have very different tax bills depending on which school district and special districts they are in."
