What Is the Difference Between a Single-Family and Multi-Family Home?

Patrick Kevin FaganPatrick Kevin FaganUpdated August 18, 2026

Single-family = standalone for one household. Multi-family = two or more units (duplex, triplex, fourplex). Multi-family lets you live in one unit and rent the others. This is a powerful wealth strategy called house hacking.

Patrick's Take

"Multi-family is one of the smartest ways to build wealth. I have helped buyers purchase a duplex, live in one unit, and use rental income to cover most of the mortgage. It is extraordinary."
