Can I Set Up a Payment Plan for Property Taxes in San Antonio?

Patrick Kevin Fagan Patrick Kevin Fagan Updated August 19, 2026

Yes, Bexar County offers property tax payment plans for homeowners. The most common option is the quarterly installment plan, which splits your taxes into four payments due in July, October, January, and April. To qualify, you must have a homestead exemption on file. The installment plan is interest-free and helps spread the cost over the year. Other payment arrangements may be available for homeowners facing financial hardship.

Who Offers Payment Plans

The Bexar County Tax Assessor-Collector administers the quarterly installment plan for property taxes. This county-level plan covers all taxing entities within Bexar County, including school districts, the city, and special districts. There is no separate plan for each taxing entity. You enroll through the Bexar County Tax Assessor-Collector's office. If you have a mortgage, your lender's escrow account acts as your payment plan by collecting taxes monthly.

How the Installment Plan Works

To use the quarterly installment plan, you must file a homestead exemption on your property before enrolling. The plan divides your estimated annual tax bill into four payments. The first payment is due by July 31, the second by October 31, the third by January 31, and the fourth by April 30. There is no interest or penalty for using the plan as long as you make each payment on time. If you miss a payment, penalties start accruing on the unpaid balance.

Payment Plans for Delinquent Taxes

If you are already delinquent on your property taxes, you may still be able to work out a payment arrangement. Contact the Bexar County Tax Assessor-Collector or the law firm handling collections to discuss a payment agreement. In some cases, you can make partial payments to stop the foreclosure process. However, penalties and interest continue to accrue on the unpaid balance until the full amount is paid. Acting quickly is important to avoid additional fees and legal action.

Patrick's Take

"The quarterly installment plan is one of the best tools Bexar County offers for homeowners. It makes a big annual expense manageable. If you are struggling to pay, do not ignore the problem. Call the tax office, explain your situation, and ask about your options before the penalties grow."
