Urban trails: Phil Hardberger Park (multiple trails through 500 acres), McAllister Park (shaded trails), and the Greenway trail system (70+ miles of paved and natural trails).
Hill Country hiking: Government Canyon State Natural Area (40 miles of trails), Friedrich Wilderness Park (10 miles), and Enchanted Rock (1.5 hours, 11 miles).
Urban Trails
Phil Hardberger Park: 500 acres, 6+ miles of trails, includes a dog park and nature center. McAllister Park: 5+ miles of trails through oak forest. Greenway trails: 70+ miles connecting parks throughout the city.
Hill Country Trails
Government Canyon: 40+ miles, moderate to difficult, includes dinosaur tracks. Friedrich Wilderness Park: 10 miles, moderate to difficult, beautiful Hill Country views. Hill Country State Natural Area: 20+ miles, remote.
Difficulty Levels
Easy: Greenway trails, McAllister Park, Hardberger Park (paved). Moderate: Friedrich, Government Canyon (outer loop). Difficult: Government Canyon (backcountry), Enchanted Rock (summit hike).
What to Bring
Essential: water (minimum 1 liter per hour), sunscreen, hat, closed-toe shoes, snacks, and phone. For longer hikes: first aid kit, map, and extra water.
Seasonal Tips
Spring and fall: ideal hiking weather (60-80F). Summer: hike early morning (before 10 AM) to avoid heat. Winter: great conditions, dress in layers. Avoid hiking in extreme heat.
Trail Etiquette
Stay on marked trails. Pack out what you pack in. Yield to uphill hikers. Keep dogs on leash. Respect wildlife. Leave no trace.
