I-35 and 1604 are the busiest. Growth is concentrated along 1604 north and I-35 northeast.
Major Highways
Interstate 35 runs north-south through the heart of San Antonio and connects directly to Austin and Dallas. It is the most congested highway in the city. Interstate 10 runs east-west from the west side through downtown and north to Boerne and beyond. Loop 1604 is the outer loop encircling the city and is the fastest-growing corridor for development. Loop 410 is the inner loop and handles significant local traffic. US-281 runs north-south through the center of the city and connects to the Stone Oak area and Hill Country.
Most Congested Routes
I-35 through downtown and north toward the I-410 interchange is consistently the most congested corridor. Loop 1604 along the north side (I-10 to US-281) is increasingly congested as development booms. US-281 near Stone Oak and during peak hours can approach gridlock. Morning rush is typically 7:00-9:00 AM and evening rush is 4:30-6:30 PM.
Growth Corridors
The fastest-growing corridors are Loop 1604 north from I-10 to I-35, the I-35 corridor northeast toward New Braunfels, the US-281 corridor north through Bulverde and Spring Branch, and the Highway 151 corridor west toward Castroville. New development, shopping centers, and employment centers are following these growth corridors.
Commute Times by Route
Typical commute times: Stone Oak to downtown: 20-30 minutes. Boerne to downtown: 30-40 minutes. Alamo Heights to downtown: 15-20 minutes. Helotes to downtown: 25-35 minutes. New Braunfels to downtown: 30-40 minutes. These times can double during peak hours or when accidents occur.
Public Transit
VIA Metropolitan Transit operates bus service throughout San Antonio, including express routes from outlying suburbs. VIA Link provides on-demand service in select areas. The city is studying potential light rail and bus rapid transit options, but no fixed-rail system currently exists.
