What Are Smoke and CO Detector Requirements?

Smoke detectors are required in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level. CO detectors are needed near bedrooms and fuel-burning appliances. Test monthly, replace batteries annually, and replace units every 10 years.

Placement

Smoke: every bedroom, hallway outside bedrooms, every level. CO: near bedrooms and appliances.

Types

Ionization for fast flames, photoelectric for smoldering fires. Combination units available.

Testing Schedule

Test monthly. Replace batteries annually (daylight saving time change is a good reminder).

Replacement

Replace entire unit every 10 years. Date of manufacture is printed on the unit.
