What Fall Maintenance Should I Do?

Patrick Kevin FaganPatrick Kevin FaganUpdated August 18, 2026

Fall maintenance: service heating system, clean gutters again after leaves fall, weatherize windows and doors, inspect chimney if applicable, drain sprinkler system, store outdoor furniture, check attic insulation, test smoke and CO detectors.

Heating Prep

Schedule furnace or heat pump tune-up before cold weather arrives.

Gutter Cleaning

Clean gutters after fall leaves drop. Clogged gutters cause ice dams in winter.

Weatherization

Check weatherstripping. Apply window film or caulk around drafty windows.

Sprinkler Winterization

Drain and blow out sprinkler lines before first freeze to prevent pipe bursts.
