How Do I Deal With Hard Water in Texas?

Patrick Kevin FaganPatrick Kevin FaganUpdated August 18, 2026

San Antonio has very hard water with high mineral content. Effects include scale buildup on fixtures, reduced appliance life, and dry skin. Solutions include a whole-house water softener ($1,000-$3,000), water filter system ($200-$1,000), or point-of-use filters.

What Hard Water Causes

Scale on fixtures, reduced appliance efficiency, dry skin and hair, spots on dishes.

Testing Hardness

Test kit or ask SAWS. San Antonio water: 15-25 grains per gallon (very hard).

Water Softener Options

Salt-based (most effective), salt-free (conditioner not softener), or dual-tank.

Cost Comparison

Softener: $1K-$3K installed. Filter: $200-$1K. Point-of-use: $50-$200.
