How Do I Check My Electrical Panel?

Patrick Kevin FaganPatrick Kevin FaganUpdated August 18, 2026

Locate your panel typically in garage or utility room. Check panel age, label accuracy, no double-tipped breakers, no rust or corrosion, no warm spots. If panel is 30+ years old or a known problematic brand like Federal Pacific or Zinsco, have it inspected by an electrician.

Visual Inspection

Check for rust, corrosion, warm spots, or signs of overheating. Panel should have a secure cover.

Problematic Brands

Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels are known fire hazards. Replace immediately if found.

Age Considerations

Panels over 30 years old may not meet current electrical demands and safety standards.

When to Upgrade

Adding circuits, frequently tripping breakers, or aluminum wiring are signs you need an upgrade.
