Patrick Kevin FaganPatrick Kevin FaganUpdated August 18, 2026

Place CO detectors near every sleeping area, on every level, and near fuel-burning appliances like furnaces and water heaters. Do not place them in kitchens, garages, or humid areas. Test monthly and replace every 5-7 years.

Placement Locations

Near bedrooms, on each level, near fuel-burning appliances, near attached garages.

Number Needed

At minimum: one on each level and one outside sleeping areas.

Testing

Test monthly using the test button. Replace batteries annually.

Replacement

Replace CO detectors every 5-7 years depending on manufacturer specifications.
