Homes built before 1978 may contain lead-based paint. Federal law requires sellers to disclose known lead paint hazards and provide buyers with an EPA pamphlet, the "Protect Your Family from Lead in Your Home" guide. Lead paint is dangerous if it is chipping, peeling, or being disturbed during renovations.
