Do I Need Earthquake Insurance for My San Antonio Home?

Patrick Kevin FaganPatrick Kevin FaganUpdated August 19, 2026

Earthquake risk in San Antonio and Bexar County is very low. Earthquake insurance is generally not considered necessary for most homeowners in this area. Standard homeowners policies do not cover earthquake damage, but given the minimal risk, most experts recommend skipping this endorsement in South Texas.

Earthquake Risk in San Antonio

San Antonio sits in a region with very low seismic activity. The USGS rates Bexar County at minimal risk for earthquakes. The nearest fault zones are hundreds of miles away. Most San Antonio homeowners will never experience earthquake damage in their lifetime.

What Standard Homeowners Insurance Covers

Standard HO-3 policies explicitly exclude earthquake damage. If you want coverage, you must purchase a separate earthquake endorsement or policy. The deductible is typically 10-20% of the dwelling limit, making it a high-cost, high-deductible product.

Cost of Earthquake Insurance

In low-risk areas like San Antonio, earthquake insurance is relatively cheap ($100-$300 per year), but the high deductible means it only pays out for catastrophic damage. For most homeowners, that trade-off does not make financial sense compared to other priorities.

When to Consider It

If you have an extraordinary risk tolerance, a very high-value home, or a lender that requires it (rare in Texas), earthquake insurance is available. For the typical San Antonio homeowner, the premium is better spent on wind/hail coverage, flood insurance, or an umbrella policy.

Patrick's Take

"Earthquake insurance in San Antonio is one of the few coverages I tell most homeowners to skip. Put that premium toward flood insurance or an umbrella policy instead. Those are the protections you are actually likely to use in Texas."
