What Is the Difference Between Assessed Value and Market Value?

Patrick Kevin FaganPatrick Kevin FaganUpdated August 18, 2026

Assessed value is what the county assigns for tax purposes. Market value is what your home would sell for. They are often very different. Assessed values in Texas are typically lower and calculated differently. Assessed value determines your tax bill. Market value determines sale price.

Patrick's Take

"In Texas, you can protest your property tax assessment every year. I recommend every homeowner do it. Successful protests save $500-$2,000 annually. Do not miss the May 15 deadline."
